El Salvador Kickoff 2008
Presentation given during Pediatric HIV[e]Education kickoff

El Salvador

In May 2008 a 4 day training was organized by Instituto Italo Latino Americo (IILA) with the Paediatric European Network for Treatment of AIDS (PENTA) foundation in San Salvador, El Salvador. IILA is an international intergovernmental organization based in Rome, Italy, and PENTA was established as a collaboration between pediatric HIV centers in Europe. The PENTA foundation developed a training program for those healthcare workers who are responsible for the treatment and care of children with HIV/AIDS. The content of the course, Tr@inforPEDHIV, was implemented into our IT platform and forms the basis for Pediatric HIV[e]education. In the beginning of 2008 the course was translated into Spanish.

During the 4 day training, healthcare workers throughout Latin America and the Caribbean gathered to learn from presentations held by experts in the field of pediatric HIV infection, from discussions between colleagues and from case presentations. On the first day all 54 participants received an USB memory stick with the Spanish version of the Pediatric HIV[e]education course. After an instruction session, everyone was given a chance to use the stick on the computer. Many participants were very excited about this new way of learning.
