Workshop participants with certificate of completion in Thika

Kenya

We have been training in Kenya since 2007. The first training was made possible with the help of Abbott, who is fighting HIV/AIDS all over the world by expanding access to treatment, supporting children and strengthening health care systems. 40 healthcare workers of the Mary Help of the Sick Mission Hospital and the Thika District Hospital participated in the Kickoff meeting on 19 December 2007.

Due to the situation in Kenya at the time, the follow-up workshop was held 3 months later than originally anticipated. Unfortunately, 19 participants were not able to join the workshop, as they moved away from Thika in the meantime. Of the 20 participants who attended the workshop, 19 received a certificate. Thanks to the financial help of Abbott and the arrangements made by Dr. Kenneth Munene and Dr. Muchai Gachago, the follow-up workshop was a great success.

The first half of 2009 was a busy one, with two kickoff trainings in less than two months, and we are looking forward to conducting more trainings in the coming years. Most recently, a combined workshop was held in July 2009 in Nairobi to close the Pediatric[e]Education training, which began in Busia in collaboration with ICS; and an HIV[e]Education training, which had started in March 2009 and was part of a cooperative effort with KANCO.

"This training is something out of the ordinary; I am going home a new woman, actually a new grandwoman."
(Program Participant at Nairobi Kickoff, March 2009)
