Mozambique workshop participants' feedback. Film created by Patricia Kalil.
Health[e]Foundation started its first pilot program in Mozambique in September 2006 at the Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade Cathólica Moçambique (UCM) in Beira, Mozambique. UCM is a new private university that focuses on educating students from
the most resource poor areas of Mozambique. The medical faculty opened
its doors in 2000 with an international staff specialized in teaching
according to the 'problem based learning' model. The university training is not only aimed at medical knowledge, but students also take
part in social projects such as starting up healthcare projects within
local communities ('saúde familiar').
After the success of the 2006 pilot training, the HIV[e]Education program became part of the medical curriculum for 5th year UCM medical students. Class Presidents were chosen in 2008 at the third annual training kickoff to provide technical support and guidance for their class peers, which proved to be a great success and has been repeated in trainings every since!

In order to be able to train all healthcare workers in Mozambique,
the HIV[e]Education program was translated into Portuguese in 2007. For
this initiative Health[e]Foundation was awarded a REACH grant by
Tibotec. The translation was done by Patricia Kalil, who is a specialist in Distance Education, curriculum development and course localization.
In 2007 the UCM 5th year students
began with the Portuguese version of the HIV[e]Education program for
optimal learning. In Manhiça, north of Maputo, a training for the
doctors, nurses and counselors of the Manhiça hospital was also
initiated. Here, we found a new partner, the Barcelona Group, who is
working in cooperation with the Mozambican Ministry of Health. This
organization specializes in malaria research, but since 2007 has been
conducting HIV/AIDS research and treats several HIV/AIDS patients in
the region. Thanks to the Portuguese version of the program we were
able to train all staff, most of whom speak only Portuguese. The
program was also introduced to a group of researchers in Maputo in
October 2007.
