The trainings in the Caribbean are organized in collaboration with the Dutch HIV Monitoring Foundation, the St. Elisabeth Hospitaal, Stichting Rode Kruis Bloedbank and the GGD of Curaçao. The Dutch HIV Monitoring Foundation started collaborating with the AIDS specialists in Curaçao in 2005 to start up a serious surveillance.
In 2006 this collaboration was followed by a workshop in Willemstad, Curaçao in which Health[e]Foundation participated. This workshop was the beginning of a successful HIV[e]Education training that was launched in April 2007. The training included internal medicine specialists, pediatricians and infectious diseases specialists as well as general practitioners, public health physicians and nurses of all islands of the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba. In April 2008 this workshop was combined with a follow-up of the e-learning part of HIV[e]Education. The most recent training, which began in January 2009 with 28 new participants, concluded with a 3-day workshop/symposium in April 2009.
With the success on Curaçao we have made efforts to expand our reach and recently finished an HIV[e]Education training in the beginning of December 2009 on St. Maarten in collaboration with the island's [RED] Campaign. We hope to continue to extend the program to other healthcare workers of Surinam and other islands in The Caribbean in the coming years.
