During the International AIDS Conference in Vienna last week, growing concerns over funding for HIV/AIDS dominated the focus of the conference. While the economic crisis has led donors to shift their priorities and minimize commitments, the need for renewed energy in the fight against HIV/AIDS is ongoing and real. Furthermore, the conference made clear that HIV/AIDS remains a problem that not only spans generations, as the first people living with HIV are surviving into old age, but also affects unsuspecting groups, such as drug users, who face a dual struggle as asserted by the Vienna Declaration. This declaration calls “for drug users to be spared arrest and offered clean needles, methadone, and treatment if they have AIDS”. Health[e]Foundation recognizes that now, more than ever, is the time to spread the knowledge on these issues in order to assist drug clinics, HIV clinics, and TB clinics in providing comprehensive medical care to those in need. We aim to bridge the healthcare gap of HIV/AIDS treatment across healthcare disciplines by offering blended e-learning programs to healthcare workers on poverty-related diseases such as HIV, TB, and mental health. For instance, our HIV education course includes the module, “Drug Use and HIV”, by Robert Douglas Bruce from Yale University. And the newest addition to our programs, which will be available in one month, is the module, “Growing Old with HIV”, by Bernard Hirschel from the University of Geneva and Victor Valcour from UCSF. |
