Community[e]Education pilot Thailand

Health[e]Foundations e-learning program Community[e]Education was piloted in Sri Saket Rajabhat University, North-East Thailand 27-28 January. A two day workshop was organized the program was funded by the International Child Support (ICS).

The pilot group consisted of 36 participants from different organizations. Participants were teachers and officials from two different Educational Service Areas (ESA2 & ESA3 + Baan Pavorn School), university students from two different Youth Groups ( Kla Lam Duan & Luk Khao Nieuw Groups) and peer educators from PATH/ PHA Network. Differences between participant’s experience and knowledge level ensured an active and communicative learning environment for all.

The first day started with engaging activities related to sex and gender issues. Our guest speaker Khun Anjana Suvarnnanonda from Human Rights Group was able to use the activities of the Community[e]Education program in an interactive way. Khun Anjanas’engaging presentation and participatory activities triggered a vivid discussion; not only about differences between sex and gender, but also how the gender roles are created through society and culture. In the afternoon we focused on facilitator skills and how to use the interactive learning in the classroom. Ajarn Wattana Kodenate, Master Trainer from ICS presented facilitator skills and sexual health education in schools. Since an educator has often difficulties starting conversations with students about sensitive topics, such as sexuality or reproductive health, the workshop aimed to offer practical insight how to talk with students about embarrassing themes.

During the second day participants learned how to use the e-learning program as a tool to conduct sexual education sessions. Everyone received individual username and password allowing an online and offline access to the Community[e]Education program. Participants also conducted several hands-on activities how the contents of the program can be used with teenagers.
During upcoming two months participants will facilitate learning sessions in their classrooms andcommunity outreach activities. Next step, as essential part of the pilot, will be the feedback of the participants and learn from their experiences.
