Course details / Basic Occupational Health Services[e]Education

About this course

Physical, ergonomic, chemical, biological and psychosocial hazards may affect workers’ health and lead to accidents or occupational and work-related diseases. These should be prevented and, if this is not possible, they should be diagnosed quickly and treated. Surveillance of the work environment and workers’ health is essential, together with education of managers and workers. Many regions and economic sectors lack regular occupational health services, however. Basic Occupational Health Services (BOHS) provide a starting point to improve occupational health in these areas and economic sectors. The Basic Occupational Health Services[e]Education program consists of seven modules, which provide information about occupational health issues for underserved workers, with a particular focus on primary health care principles.

Who is this course for?

All healthcare workers.

What you will learn

The modules focus on surveillance of work environments and workers’ health; risk assessment; health education and promotion; prevention of occupational health hazards and accidents; and rehabilitation following occupational or work-related diseases.

The e-learning program presents the policy aims of Occupational Health Services (OHS) as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). It offers an overview of the strategies needed to develop Basic Occupational Health Services (BOHS) as a new component of primary healthcare services. The elements of BOHS are discussed, as well as a description of the organization and financing required to set up BOHS. Throughout the course, practical cases are described.
