About this course
This course was first developed in 2014, and has been further developed and updated annually ever since. In December 2018, the course has been updated specifically to fit to the Ethiopian context. The aim is to provide continuous medical education to medical professionals working in the field of maternal and newborn health. The course is part of an important strategy to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity rates.
Who is this course for?
It is especially written for medical professionals working in maternal and newborn health in Ethiopia. This includes midwives, as well as nurses, gynecologists, obstetricians, general practitioners or health officers.
What you will learn
The course contains 17 modules on pregnancy and childbirth, such as antenatal care, labor and birth, care of the newborn and breastfeeding. It also focuses on the major causes of maternal and newborn complications, morbidity and deaths, such as postpartum hemorrhage; preeclampsia; HIV and prevention of mother to child transmission. Modules on cervical cancer and family planning are also included to contribute to the overall health and wellbeing of women and their newborns. The course contains globally accepted evidence based information and guidelines. Throughout the course, specific information about the Ethiopian setting is included and an additional module ‘Epidemiology of maternal health in Ethiopia’ module is available.
