Refugee Care[e]Education (NL)

Refugee Care[e]Education is developed in 2017. This program of Health[e]Foundation is a reaction to the devastating situation in Syria, causing many to flee their country in search for a safer place. Many refugees arrived and asked for asylum in the Netherlands. These immigrants experience health risks from their country of origin and during their voyage to the Netherlands. The effects of conflict and displacement on mental health and psychosocial wellbeing are profound. Therefore it is important to recognize, detect and treat (mental) health problems early, to improve the chances of immigrants in participating in the labor market and to foster the new language. However health facilities are under strain and health professionals have to deal with a population with health problems that are not common in their daily practice. The main goal of the course is to inform general practitioners about common health problems in Syria, cultural background, effects of experiences of armed conflict and displacement, and available support systems in the Netherlands. This will enable the professionals to support refugees adequately, recognize health problems and if necessary refer to the right support system and therefore guarantee quality care for refugees who are based in the Netherlands.
