Follow-Ups workshops in Ethiopia
News | 30 October 2017
Besides the general evaluation of the training, the nutrition and communication presentation and the LEGO exercise, the workshop in Ethiopia puts a lot of focus on practicing skills. The maternal mortality rate in Ethiopia is relatively high comparing to other countries and number one cause of maternal death is postpartum hemorrhage. This is why the Federal Ministry of Health advised us to include a skills part in our follow-up workshops.
On the first day of the workshop, all the participants took part in the Helping Mothers Survive skills training from Jhpiego. The training was facilitated by midwives from the Ethiopian Midwives Association. The skills training focused on managing the third stage of labor and paid specific attention to postpartum hemorrhage, which is one of the main causes of maternal mortality in Ethiopia. An additional presentation was given about this topic. The skills trainers also addressed other important topics regarding pregnancy: Respectful Maternity Care and Disrespect and abuse in facility-based childbirth. After the presentations, a demonstration was given on how to take care of mothers who are suffering from PPH.
On the second day, the skills training continued. Participants learned and practiced how to help mothers survive during delivery. All the participants were divided into groups to practice the skills to manage PPH. The follow-up workshop ended with a cheerful ceremony whereby almost all participants received their certificate and a group photo was taken.
